Zaima Questions
Questions About the Zaima Annotation System
The questions in this section have the purpose of properly understanding
conceptual ideas about the Zaima system.
- Question 1 [Abstract]: Is «የቅዱስ ያሬድ የዜማ ምልክቶች» the preferred designator? This is an Amharic phrase, a Ge'ez phrase might be better.
- Question 2 [Section 1.1]: The position of a mood line will be written at the lowest level above the base text. Is this a firm rule or is just a practice of some writers?
- Question 3 [Section 1.2]: When more than one mood appears in the Zaima, which one is the default?
- Question 4 [Section 1.3]: The following assertions must be verified. A "Yes" answer is appropriate when the assertion is correct. A "No" answer should be accompanied with an explanation.
- Question 4a: Izzel may not appear by itself. [Yes | No -explain]
- Question 4b: Ge'ez may appear by itself. [Yes | No -explain]
- Question 4c: Araray may appear by itself. [Yes | No -explain]

- Question 4j: The tonal marks (non-letter symbols) apply only to the letter below. [Yes | No -explain]
- Question 4k: Annotations (abbreviated words, non-tonal marks) apply to the entire word below. [Yes | No -explain]
- Question 4l: Tonal marks may be stacked together within a row for emphasis.
- Question 4l: Annotations may not be stacked together.
- Question 4m: No more than 3 tonal marks may occur in a stack. [Yes | No -explain]
- Question 5 [Section 2.1.1]: Are there rules that indicates when a class alternative should be used?

- Question O4 [Other Questions]: Can two Short Rikriks (᎓) stack together? If so, would the stacking of two short rikriks be different or the same as a four dot rikrik?
Questions on XML Presentation of Samples
To answer these questions, the sample images must be reviewed against the XML form to verify that the XML properly
represents the Zaima in the image.
- Question 7 [Figure 2.4]: Verify that the distribution of Zaima notation over ባኖስ correct.
- Question 8 [Figure 2.6]: Verify that these are 4 rows and not a case of ᎖᎓᎔ stacking on top of ቡር.
- Question 9 [Figure 2.6]: Verify that Kurt is used here and not a smudged Rikrik.
- Question 10 [Figure 2.6]: Verify that Kinet and Chiret are used correctly (sometimes they look similar).
- Question 11 [Figure 2.6]: Verify that the bottom most Ge'ez mode is the primary.
- Question 12 [Figure 2.7]: Verify that these are 4 rows and not a case of ቡ stacking on top of ᎐ (Yizet), and that the Yizet is intended.
- Question 13 [Figure 2.7]: Verify that the top most Izzel is the primary.
- Question 14 [Figure 2.9]: Is the Zaima over ኦ፡ considered to be associated with both ኦ፡ or only ኦ?
- Question 15 [Figure 2.10]: Is the difference in the separation between መ and ፡ (close) in the base text, and the separation between ኦ and ፡ (far) in the previous example intentional or accidental?
- Question 16 [Figure 2.10]: Is it deliberate, and critical, that ወ hangs half way off the right side of መ?
- Question 17 [Figure 2.11]: Verify that ለ is annotation for the base letter ብ. In principle the abbreviated terms apply to the
entire word base.
- Question 18 [Figure 2.11]: Verify that ታ is annotation for እ (and not ብ).
If so then we have both a left and right overhang occurring.
- Question 19 [Figure 2.11]: Verify the markup of the Izzel mood.
- Question 20 [Figure 2.12]: We want the annotation above ኦ to overhang only over the preceding ፡ and go no further leftward.
[Perhaps a rule is needed here that left and right overhang, only overhangs a following punctuation or
inter-letter space.]
- Question 21 [Figure 2.16]: Check if አምኑ was a single abbreviation and not two.
- Question 22 [Figure 2.17]: Verify the distribution over ቀው.
- Question 23 [Figure 2.18]: Verify the distribution over ል፡,
should ል፡ be marked as a group or individually or is it only ል that is marked with a right side overhang
occurs over ፡?
- Question 24 [Figure 2.18]: Check if the long ᎓᎖᎓... sequence is one contiguous
annotation over the entire word, or many short annotations over each letter.
- Question 25 [Figure 2.19]: Verify the distribution over ነ.
- Question 26 [Figure 2.19]: Verify that these are triple stacks, and not two rows where a double stack is on to of a single mark (or a single mark on top of a double stack).
- Question 27 [Figure 2.20]: Check if these are truly stacked Chirets.
- Question 28 [Figure 2.20]: Verify the distributions between ኒ and ማ for both Ge'ez and Izzel.
- Question 29 [Figure 2.21]: Check if these are truly stacked Chirets.
- Question 30 [Figure 2.21]: If the Chirets are not stacked, is the over-lapping alignment is intentional or accidental?
- Question 31 [Figure 2.22]: Check if these are truly stacked Chirets.
- Question 32 [Figure 2.22]: Check if left side alignment is intentional or accidental.

- Question 38 [Figure 2.26]: Is the Izzel text on its own presentation row? If so, is it required that the presentation line appear vertically between two others?
- Question 39 [Figure 2.27]: Are the three Chirets on a presentation row half-way between the two Ge'ez rows?
